What do black and white feedback pegs mean?

Black means the peg has both the correct color and position, while white means the color is right but the position is wrong. Combining both types of feedback is how you methodically crack the code.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

Yes, you can press number keys 1 through 8 to quickly pick palette colors. That speeds up entry significantly compared to clicking each peg individually.
